What size basketball should my child use?

Well, given the smaller hands and stature of kids, we recommend ball sizes that are proportionate to their bodies.  Generally we suggest a size 3 ball, which has a 12” circumference, for kids 5 and under and a size 5, or 27.5” ball for those that are 6 and older.  If you’re wondering about the in-between size, it is not commonly sold so we just skip it to minimize chaos and confusion.

The increased surface area of a big ball makes it easier for kids to dribble, however, we encourage the use of a smaller ball primarily for developing good shooting technique.  The bigger the ball, the heavier it is, and we do not want kids chucking or flinging balls just to make it up to a hoop, even though they are lower for younger kids.  Instead, we want to practice good habits by teaching and reinforcing proper shooting stance and form.

The primary goal of our classes is to instill a love for the game of basketball.  With appropriately sized equipment, we set the kids up for success and keep them coming back!
